Well the answer is yes, and no…

First let’s look at where most of the western saddles are produced- in the USA. The industry in America for western saddles is huge therefore the selection is far greater than any place on earth. The Western saddle also originated in the Americas so no place does it better than the USA when it comes to manufacturing and producing western saddles.

The American Quarter Horse Association is the largest breed registry in the world, with more than three million American Quarter Horses registered in the US alone, and over 5 million registered worldwide. With this breed dominating the western industry, western saddles are designed with the American Quarter Horse and other stock type breeds in mind which includes Paints and Appaloosas. While there are some saddles with trees for Arabians and gaited horses, the majority are for stock type horses. There is little or no consideration for native breeds such as Welsh, Thoroughbred or the average Cob. So the chances of ‘any western saddle’ fitting your non- American Quarter Horse are slim to none.

In America, the QH breeds are also far more specialised than here in the UK. There are of course exceptions, but the majority of quarter horses here in the UK are general purpose. They do a little horsemanship, a little trail, maybe a little reining, and even English riding, in addition to being the family pet or happy hack. Only a small percentage of the entire UK population is bred for a very specific event like reining or horsemanship.

If you go to a show in America and watch a Western Pleasure class you will see horses that basically all look the same. They have similar builds- height, weight and type, move the same and are basically clones of each other They are often are all related to the latest ‘of the moment pleasure sire.’ You only have to look at YouTube videos of something like the Reichert Celebration or Western Pleasure at Congress to see what I’m referring to. The saddles they wear are Show/Equitation saddles -most likely Phil Harris, Blue Ribbon or something custom. They are built on an equitation tree that holds the rider in the correct shoulder-hip-heel position. Most of these saddles will be semi QH bars- a more narrow or medium fit due to the tall slim build of these horses. Also, these saddles are mostly impractical for anything but showing. They are heavily tooled and dripping in silver. These riders aren’t typically in the saddle for more than an hour or so at a time. So fit, while still important, has less meaning for a Show saddle due to the nature of its use. So in theory, yes you could buy a ‘show saddle’ and for the time you ride in it, it suits its purpose and can be used on a multitude of similar typed quarter horses.

Let’s look at the reining saddle. If you look at how reiners are bred, again there is a lot of similarity in shape and build. Reining horses are mostly kept stabled and taken out for short periods, 5-6 days a week for training- mostly loping. A reining saddle is designed for loping, stopping and turning. There is no jogging in a reining pattern (apart from one pattern with a jog in to the centre). Reining saddle technology and design has evolved over the years to fit the modern day reining horse. Reining saddles are designed with this modern ‘ideal’ shape in mind. Because a reining horse is so specialised and your time in the saddle is in short spurts, your odds of purchasing a good quality ‘off the shelf’ reining saddle that will suit your reining horse, in the US, are increased.

The most common type of western saddle in the US is the trail or pleasure saddle. Why? Because that is what most of the US population does with their horses. Trail ride- or as we say in the UK, ‘hack.’ There are a wider variety and style of trail saddles than any other because a wider variety of horses need to be accommodated for.

Because there is such a wide variety of western saddles available in the US and they cost less to purchase there, without the shipping abroad, VAT or import charge, most people have more than one saddle. You might have a show saddle, a reining saddle and an everyday work or pleasure/trail saddle. Unfortunately, due to the cost of western saddles here in the UK, this isn’t always feasible so you need to pick the best fit and saddle best suited to you and your horse that you possibly can.

So the next time someone says to you that any western saddle fits any horse, you will have a better idea of where that notion comes from, and why it rarely is the case, it sometimes could be.

https://www.myclubhouse.co.uk/AQHA-UK/Client/Images/Cms/74234644_414567336136101_604010789958844416_n.jpg

Photo above: A reining saddle

Just like with English saddles there are different types of western saddles designed specifically for the various western events. While some of these saddles can be used across events, there are some that cannot so easily. Let’s look at a few of the different saddle types and how they are most suited to their disciplines.

Reining saddles:

These are some of the most widely used saddles here in the UK. The main reason is that while only a handful of people who ride western actually compete in reining, reining saddles are what has been most widely available for purchase here in the UK over the many years. So historically this is what people think of when they think western saddle.

Reining saddles are designed for loping, stopping/sliding, spinning and backing. There isn’t any walking or jogging in the reining patterns, unless it’s for entering the ring to begin the pattern. These saddles have ‘pancake cantles’ that are wider and flatter to rotate the pelvis backward in preparation for big stops and slides. The seat pockets are set back from the centre of a horse and the fenders are hung in a more forward position. While these saddles are used in other disciplines they don’t put the rider in an ergonomical ‘shoulder-hip-heel position and they will find it difficult to get and hold their legs underneath them for classes like horsemanship. They have smaller horns so they don’t get in the way of the reins and tend to be longer to balance the weight down the length of the back. Reining saddles come in a lot of widths but rarely in an extra wide and they tend to be straighter in the tree, with minimal rock. They are designed for the industry standard in the USA for reining horses which are long bodied, med-wide width, with long backs and bodies.

Event specific saddle

Flat cantle

Low pommel

Low horn

In-skirt rigging

Dropped rigging

Free swinging fenders hung forward of the centre seat pocket

Longer skirts

Cut-away skirts for close contact

Not usually a hind cinch

Double skirting

Silver optional

Back Pocket seating position

https://www.myclubhouse.co.uk/AQHA-UK/Client/Images/Cms/72943132_418395732433855_6392883529595748352_n.jpg

Photo above: Cutting Saddle

Cutting Saddles:

Cutting saddles are designed with the sport of competition cutting in mind. The fenders are free swinging, the seats are flatter with low cantles and the pommels are very tall with very tall slim horns for holding. They are designed to keep you balanced in the seat for big low lateral movements and the stirrups are slimmer for locking in the boot heel when bracing.

Flat seat

Rough-out jockey

Rough-out fenders

Tall thin horn

Free swing fenders

Long skirts, 30 plus

High, wide pommel

Heavy duty rigging

Heavy hardwood tree

Out skirt rigging

Larger seat size, 17 plus

Narrow stirrups

Hind cinch

Free swing stirrups

Low flat cantle

https://www.myclubhouse.co.uk/AQHA-UK/Client/Images/Cms/67808399_600807090448260_2236905446923304960_n.jpg

Photo above: Pleasure Saddle

Pleasure saddles:

Also called trail saddles, pleasure saddles make up the most diverse section of western saddles. They tend to be lighter weight, more plain with less silver and tooling for easy cleaning. Their seat pockets are central and fenders are hung either straight down or slightly forward of the centre seat pockets for a natural seat position. The pommel and cantle are high and the seats are smaller at 14” on average to keep you secure in the seat when running time events. The horn is generally tall and rawhide laced for grip. They are single skirted to save weight and have hind cinches to help stabilise. These saddles tend to run narrow and small so there is limited fit potential for native breeds here in the UK which are on the wider and heavier side. These saddles are designed to stand out in a show ring with lots of silver and deep intricate tooling patterns. They have central seat positioning with fenders hung from centre that are ‘locked in’ with little movement forward or backward to keep your leg in the desired ‘shoulder-hip-heel’ position for show classes such as western horsemanship, western pleasure and trail classes. These saddles mostly come in a semi quarter horse/medium fit with very straight trees as again they are made for the industry standard in the US which is tall lean, quarter horses with a lot of thoroughbred blood. FQHB( Full Quarter Horse Bar)/ wider versions can be found but there are few high end makers producing these. Show saddles are too heavy and too ornate for every day riding, plus a lot to keep cleaned. Top show saddles tend to be stored indoors in bags and only come out for show time as they run up to $25,000 in the USA for top makers like Phil Harris and Blue all-around saddles cover a large range of heavy duty work saddles designed for all day use on a ranch. They are versatile for ranch work including, roping with a wrapped horn and hind cinch, and hard wearing but comfortable enough for all day riding. These saddles are rugged with heavy duty hardware and thicker leather. The trees are hardwood, wrapped in bullhide or rawhide to add strength and durability. They have trail ties for gear and often slick seats/hard seats. The hard seat has a bad rep due to its name and appearance but can be one of the most comfortable saddles you’ll ever ride in due to the ergonomics of the tree and shape of the ground its name for its distinctive tree shape with the larger wider horn, slick fork and higher cantle. It sits lower to the back and has a wrapped horn for roping. These saddles have gained in popularity over the years with the rise of ‘natural horsemanship’ and the clinicians who ride in them. The downside to wade saddles is they tend to be heaviest of the saddle types and also some of the most expensive. They are made with thicker leather, heavier hardware, stronger trees, and overall more raw materials. While the original maker of the wade type saddle is unknown, it has been named for Clifford Wade who introduced the saddle to the Dorrance family, and after some slight changes became what we know today as the Wade saddle. The Wade saddle was then produced by Hamley’s starting in the 1940’s. This saddle is also sometimes referred to as a Buckaroo saddle.

Comfort for all day ranch riding

Roping

General ranch work

Rugged, well built, heavy

Smooth or Rough out leather

Heavy duty hardware

Hard seat or slick seat

Hind cinch

Monel stirrups

Trail latigos

Centre hung fenders for upright ideal riding position

Slick fork/A- fork

Low deep seat

Low swells

Lariat strap

Other types of western saddles:

Parade

Western dressage

Working cow

Mexican charro

Endurance

Arabian

Gaited horse

Mule

Antique

Is there a Western General Purpose saddle?

While there isn’t a western saddle equivalent of the GP saddle, there are several types of saddles that will work well for a novice level. I’d always suggest buying the type of saddle for what you and your horse do most. If it’s hacking with an occassional show, then a pleasure or trail saddle would be the most suited to you and still keep you in the correct position for showing. It could be used for most disciplines except reining. If you have bought a reining trained horse and plan to compete in mainly reining then a reining saddle is a must. It is the only saddle designed to keep you back on the horse for the big deep stops. If you were to attempt a sliding stop in a trail, show saddle, ranch saddle or wade, then your upright position would leave you tipped forward and your fenders would be not be in front of you to help brace and balance in a stop. Here in the UK people show all sorts of classes in the same saddle. The key is to find what one that fits you and your horse above anything else.

Could I just buy a saddle from the USA?

While you could pick up a saddle on holiday to the USA, it would be important to know what you’re buying and if it would fit. A lot of people getting into western don’t realise the cost and try to save money by buying directly from the US. Unless you know exactly what you’re looking for, then buying something in the US may not fit your horse here and moreso, if you aren’t sure what you’re buying then you may end up with a saddle made in India. Yes, that’s right. Just because you buy a saddle in the USA doesn’t mean it was made there. A quality saddle in the USA will still cost you at the least, $1500 for a used one. Most new are $2000 and up. Top quality ones start at $3000. If you have it shipped back its $150-$200 in postage (without insurance) and then the government is going to hit you with a 20% VAT bill upon entering the country and that’s on the purchase value plus the shipping. After all that you may end up with a lovely saddle that doesn’t fit your horse. It ends up being false economy because then you have to resell it and you may lose money.

What else should I know about Western Saddles?

There are generally 4 recognised generic terms for western saddle sizes. They are Semi Quarter Horse Bars (Narrow), Quarter Horse Bars (Medium), Full Quarter Horse Bars (Wide) and now also Extra Full Quarter Horse Bars, also called Draft (Extra Wide). There are other bars that are less common like Haflinger Bars, Arabian Bars and Mule Bars.

These are generic terms that can vary per saddle maufacturer. Its like saying small, medium, large or extra large. You may wear a large from Marks & Spencers but a medium from Next. These terms are based on the angle of the bars as it come from the gullet area or swells. Bar angle is only one factor when determining fit, when there are other factors which includes gullet width and rock to just name two. If someone tells you their horse takes a Full Quarter Horse Bar, (FQHB) then I would ask- in what brand of saddle. There is no universal measurement for these terms. What is a FQHB in a Crates saddle may be more narrow than a FQHB in a Billy Cook. The only way to know for sure if a saddle fits is by trying it on. And if you still aren’t sure, get advice from a reputable professional saddle fitter.

Western saddles need regular checking just like English saddles:

If your saddle has been fitted by a professional they should advise you the timescale for when it should be checked again. Youngsters fitted for their first saddle will need recheck in the the first 6 months. If it’s an older horse that has been with the same owner on the same schedule for years I’d recommend a first check 12 months after the first fit and then not again unless the owner thinks there may be an issue which would be a change in behaviour or a significant change in the horse’s weight and topline. Sometimes its a matter of just changing the pad and other times it means a new saddle. If you have a saddle fit, make sure you choose a professional who takes their saddles back on trade-in so you aren’t left with a saddle to try and sell yourself, plus the expense of having a new one fit.

Some of the signs that your saddle may not fit may be any of the following:

dips behind the scapulas

horse tripping a lot

short stepping, no willingness to walk out

biting or making faces when cinched

stopping and relunctanced to move forward

hollowing of the back

reluctance to bend or turn

difficulty flexing or getting head down

bucking

excessive tail swishing

any soreness over the back- wither, ribs, shoulders, loin

white hairs coming out on the back

What price – how much do I pay for a western saddle?

Western saddles can vary in price but on average a quality used western saddle will be around £1500 give or take. There are some under £1000. These tend to be either Indian junk (around the £350 mark or less) or older, dated saddles or saddles that are known to not fit horses in the UK as well. As an example, Circle Y are a decent middle of the road saddle made in the USA. They tend to go for £500-£800 as most are narrow fitting and straight in the tree and horses in the UK ridden western, on average are heavier, wider and have a lot of curve, or dip in the back. Used saddles can range anywhere from £500 up to £3000 but on average, but expect to pay around £1500 give or take, for something quality that will fit and hold it’s value for resale down the road. New saddles start at £2000 and go up. Keep in mind that these prices can vary with the fluctuating £ to $ exchange rate. Finding a used saddle that fits well is a good start as its already depreciated in value. If you bought branded quality and look after your saddle, you won’t lose money when it comes time to sell it on. While there may not always be a used saddle available that fits, if you buy new, its best to seek the help of a professional to fit one, otherwise it can be a costly mistake.

Which saddle pad to choose?

The best advice about saddle pads is if you are new to western- don’t buy your pad before your saddle. Have your saddle fit first and then buy the pad that best suits the fit of your saddle and your horse. If you arleady ride western your saddle fitter should try and work with the pads you already have but it’s not always going to be the best choice to complement the fit of the saddle. My recommendation is anything with a natural fibre like wool felt, or merino/sheepskin. Natural fibres promote healthy sweat and wick away moisture, cooling the back. If the horse has a fit back and the saddle fits, then a standard 3/4” wool pad that is not less than 2” visible at the front and back, should be ideal. One of the biggest mistakes I see in showing is when the horse is ridden with a pad for daily work and then at shows, a blanket is put on top of this pad. This adds an extra 1/4” to the top of the pad and could put your saddle too high, changing the fit and how the tree sits on the back. If you ride in a 3/4” pad at home then for shows, use a 1/2” pad with a 1/4” blanket as to not change the fit of the saddle. Pad thickness can vary from 1/2” up to 1” pads. When I fit a saddle, I like to fit to a 3/4” pad if possible. This gives some options for small weight changes with the possibility of using a 1” if the horse loses topline in the winter and down to a 1/2” with excessive weight gain.

How do I choose the right size for me – the rider?

We’ve talked a lot about fit for the horse, but how do you choose what seat size is best for the rider. As a rule of thumb, a 15” seat is for a youth, 15.5” is a petite person, 16” is standard- most people will be in this seat size. 16.5” saddles are getting more common as well. 17” and 18” saddles are available but are less common and rarely seen in the UK. Not only does backside size play a part, but femur length as well.

Other things that affect how roomy a seat will feel is the rise in the seat. A saddle with a lot of rise will have a deep seat pocket so there is less surface area for the backside. A flatter seat will feel roomier even if the seat size measures up the same as that of a saddle with a deeper seat. On your higher-end saddles the tree size is often one or two inches larger than the actual seat size. So a saddle may have a 16” tree, but a seat padded to a 15” or 15.5”.

Once again, the best way to know what suits you as a rider is to ride in as many saddles as you can. There is no wrong answer for seat size- it’s what’s comfortable for you the rider and puts you in a position to get the most out of riding your horse.

And finally:

Some links you may find useful in your quest for a perfect saddle – and more information too!

Thank you so much to Jennifer Sheerin for sharing her expertise and knowledge. Display
Visibility
Usually, the display of member data is subject to the logged-in user having specific entitlements to view that data. By default,
this component will respect those entitlements and only show data that the user is allowed to see. However, in certain circumstances,
you may wish to remove these restrictions and, instead, rely on the permissions required to view the CMS page itself.
For example, when creating a "Meet the Committee" page, for viewing by members, you will probably need to disable the member data entitlements as
members would not normally have permission to view the personal details of committee members.
the usual Member visibility restrictions WILL be applied.
The displayed list of Members will be limited to those who the logged in user has permission to see.
Important: the usual Member visibility restrictions WILL NOT be applied.
All of the Members in the list will be displayed, regardless of the logged in user's permissions. Please ensure that the CMS space
has appropriate restrictions applied.
the usual Member data visibility restrictions WILL be applied.
In addition, for contact details, only those that have been explicitly shared by the Member will be visible; even if the viewing
Member has elevated permissions.
the usual Member data visibility restrictions WILL be applied.
The information you select below will only be visible to those who have the entitlements to view those particular fields for the particular
Members displayed.
Important: the usual Member data visibility restrictions WILL NOT be applied.
The information you select below will be visible to anybody who has visibility of the CMS page containing this widget. Please ensure that the CMS space
